A herbarium is a repository of preserved plant specimens, mostly dried, to be used as a reference collection for studies in taxonomy, systematics, natural history, ecology, genetics, pharmacology, and molecular biology.  The UPRRP Herbarium is set up to be such a reference collection not only for Puerto Rico, but also for the whole Caribbean Basin.  For this reason we have an active collection program for the plants of Puerto Rico, duplicate collections of which are made for exchange with other institutions. Our Herbarium is presently one of the Caribbean's most active in growth and in the provision of research specimens. Our current holdings are over 48,000 specimens with space to house approximately 40,000 more. Our collection now includes the following taxa: Tracheophytes, Bryophytes, Algae and Fungi. We also have a small library that meets most needs for identification of Caribbean plants.

Aside from institutional consultations and every day use of collections and facilities, UPRRP receives visitors who have used our facilities and consulted our collections for their research or teaching projects.

UPRRP is operated by the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus.
